I want to thank John for really pushing for us to collaborate again after Call Me When You Can—an experience I entirely enjoyed. After sending him some stems, recordings, and drafts of tracks, he once again pursued new paths of composition using methods I have no ability to execute. I don’t even understand how they work! But that’s part of the wonder of teaming up like this.
Tracks started to come together in the late fall/winter of 2021 and then a push of work was done in March of 2022. I feel like Loom is a collection of pieces that have a kind of melancholy to them, cold but wanting to be warm, a bit of a beautiful bummer…and I really love how the final track, “Will Call,” points to a glimmer of warmth that changes perspective for the album’s conclusion while still being grounded in the mood of the rest of it. Not to be all, “We did a GREAT job,” but it’s a set we’re certainly proud of.
When we were thinking of a possible home for this album, Cached was always the dream. For the last few years, M(att) Sage has been a creator and curator of brilliant collaborations with this label, and as someone who had previously worked with both John and me (me on his album Wants A Diamond Pivot Bright; John through the near-release of Plains on his prior venture, Patient Sounds), we hoped he would be sympathetic to what we did here. To know that he was continues to be a source of inspiration.
